The work found in Reclaimed, Reimagined speaks to the urgent issues unfolding in the United States today. Our rights are challenged by an uncertain political future. Women’s rights and those of the LGBTQIA community are threatened by the reconfiguration of the Supreme Court.  And despite all of these challenges, the battle to recognize that Black lives truly matter continues. Many artists in this exhibition remind us of the need to reclaim one’s position in the socio-political landscape. Concurrently the pandemic forced us to reimagine both our interior and exterior relationships to space and how to navigate environments in new ways.

Many of the artists in Reclaimed, Reimagined use the body as a tool for demonstrating power, history and beauty while others reimagine bodies as a platform for political discourse and as a space where identity structures are redefined. Other artists look at the spaces they inhabit—drawing from elements of building construction like blueprints, raw materials and diagrams. Utilizing abstraction and symbolism, these artists explore issues such as equity and immigration, while others develop dream-like environments—brand new spaces we may escape to in order to find solis from this current tumultuous time.

About Guest Curator:

David Rios Ferreira

Ferreira is a visual artist, curator and is currently the director of public programs and curator of contemporary art at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM). Ferreira’s curatorial approach sheds light on under-represented narratives through works of art that challenge audience views on materials, art-making practices, and ideas of who is welcomed to these practices. The artists he collaborates with and the exhibitions he curates confront preconceived notions of artists and contemporary art while providing an entry point to the broader public. Most recently he developed the Museum’s newest series of exhibitions starting with Art, Artists & You (2018) and the recently opened Inside Art (2020). These exhibitions merge art installations, family art making spaces and an artist-in-residence program to introduce contemporary art through the lens of creative placemaking, maker movement philosophy and social justice.
